President Obama projected that 2014 would be a "breakthrough year" for the U.S. economy.

"We head into next year with an economy that's stronger than it was when we started the year," Obama said Dec. 20 at the White House during his final press conference of 2013.

He said "more Americans are finding work and ... our businesses are positioned for new growth and new jobs."

Obama spoke shortly after the Commerce Department reported that gross domestic product rose at a revised 4.1% annual clip in the third quarter, the fastest pace in almost two years.
